Earlier this week, I attended a reception marking the 99th anniversary of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army, hosted by Ambassador Xu Feihong and Defence Attaché Rear Admiral You Jian.
In their keynote addresses, both highlighted the recent improvement in bilateral relations.
A large-scale India–China conflict appears unlikely in the foreseeable future, given both civilisations’ longstanding preference for peace and stability. Yet serious tensions persist—from China’s support for forces inimical to India’s interests in the neighbourhood to a bilateral trade deficit exceeding $112 billion. India and China also remain strategic competitors in an increasingly contested geopolitical order.
Peace is imperative, but it must be reinforced by strategic clarity, economic rebalancing and sustained diplomacy.
